APSU says everything must go . . . to charity

Rawlins, Cross and Killebrew residence halls will be no more.

The three buildings at Austin Peay State University will be torn down and replaced by a new $25.5-million, 416-bed residence hall. But the buildings aren’t a total loss.

APSU, in partnership with American Constructors, donated an estimated 1,000 pieces of furniture from the dormitories to Clarksville’s Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

“We’re thrilled about it,” said ReStore Manager Kathryn Norbeck-Dayley. “It’s mostly beds, close to 395 beds, about 100 night stands, 50 chests, over 300 chairs and about 35 desks.”

The local ReStore sells donated building materials, furniture and major appliances at its 408 Madison St. location. Profits are used locally to build Habitat for Humanity houses for low-income families. In an effort to turn the enormous donation around quickly, ReStore will host a Tent Event in its parking lot from 9 a.m. – noon Saturday.

The furniture will be priced to move, Norbeck said, with solid oak beds at $35-$45, chairs at $15-$20, night stands around $25, chests of drawers from $35-$45 and desks at $55-$65.

Because all of the donated furniture will not fit in ReStore’s warehouse space, Norbeck worked with other Habitat for Humanity locations to share the wealth. The Habitat for Humanity in Hopkinsville, Ky., and ReStore in Glasgow, Ky., are taking some of the furniture. Norbeck said the ReStore got a good deal from Judd Harnage at Fleetco in Nashville on a 40-foot trailer that will be used for storage in the ReStore’s parking lot, but that doesn’t come close to holding 1,000 pieces of furniture.

Norbeck said she would love to sell all of the furniture at Saturday’s Tent Event, but if she can’t, she will work with the local Salvation Army and Goodwill stores to ensure that none of it goes to waste.

The project involves cooperation between many groups and individuals. In addition to Larry Phelps, Alycia Milner, Eric Andrews and Dru Bradley, who work at the ReStore, many volunteers have helped. Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Jennifer Kready and board members Millie and Tom Armstrong helped run the ReStore while the staff was busy collecting donated furniture starting on Wednesday. Volunteers from Deliverance Outreach Temple and SSF Submission Academy also helped with the massive project of removing the furniture from the dorms and loading it into trucks.

Norbeck said she is thankful so many people came together to enable the ReStore to make good use of the generous gift.

“We’re super excited about this donation. We can’t thank Austin Peay and American Constructors enough,” Norbeck said. “The ReStore has two builds (of local Habitat for Humanity houses) this year. This is a great source for income to help us do more builds next year.”

Habitat for Humanity ReStore Accepts Large Material Donation from Winner of “Sustainable Project of the Year” Award.

Clarksville, TN (I-Newswire) June 7, 2011 – Actus Lend Lease, winner of the “Sustainable Project of the Year” award for 2011, made a large donation to Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County’s ReStore. Actus selected the ReStore for its sustainability mission and community impact. The donation consisted of paneled doors, double pane vinyl windows, wood trim and molding, hanging and ceiling mounted light fixtures, light bulbs, screen doors, metal kick plates, door sweeps, recessed canned lights, and much more.

“We can’t stress enough how valuable commercial donors are to the ReStore and Habitat mission. The Actus’ donation was exceptional, quality inventory that will be passed to our customers at a discounted price. The ReStore anticipates building two of the four homes slated for the 2011 build season. This donation will also increase our capacity to build more homes next year,” says ReStore manager, Kathryn Norbeck-Dayley.

Actus Lend Lease’s Campbell Crossing project team at Fort Campbell, KY was the recipient of the Platinum Award for the Zero Energy Homes (ZEH) presented as part of the ‘Build Tennessee’ Awards, which recognizes firms for their excellence in serving the construction community of Tennessee. The zero energy homes at Campbell Crossing feature a design approach focused on energy efficiency and solar thermal energy production, resulting in a home that functions on 54 percent less energy than a home of comparable size constructed using today’s building standards. The Zero Energy Homes of Campbell Crossing represent the first zero energy homes constructed on a military installation and the first known zero energy duplex in the United States. Norbeck says, “The ReStore is excited that a builder so in line with the ReStore mission of Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, and Rebuild chose us to benefit from such a windfall donation.”

Actus project engineer, Barbie Downing said, “We think it’s important to understand and contribute to the communities in which we operate. There are many outstanding programs in the Clarksville/Ft. Campbell area that we are proud to be involved with. The Restore not only benefits the local community, but also creates a more sustainable environment by salvaging materials for reuse while simultaneously diverting construction waste from landfills. Partnerships with organizations that parallel Lend Lease core values of Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Collaboration, Excellence and Trust creates a win-win for each party as well as the local community in which we serve.”

To make room for the new inventory, the ReStore will hold door sale from June 4 to June 11. The doors will be an additional 30% off (some restrictions may apply). Donated inventory can be viewed on the ReStore website, www.clarksvillerestore.org.

Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, TN welcomes Kathryn Norbeck-Dayley as the new ReStore Manager. Norbeck arrives just in time to be a part of ReStore’s second annual Green Thumb Festival. The Green Thumb Festival is a free community event.

Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore of Clarksville recently welcomed new manager, Kathryn Norbeck-Dayley. Norbeck joins the staff as they prepare for the second annual Green Thumb Festival.

Norbeck, a native Clarksvillian, said, “I’m excited to be a part of such a great organization, Habitat for Humanity and ReStore do good works; plain and simple. I’m proud to represent Clarksville ReStore and Habitat of Montgomery County as the ReStore manager and very excited to participate in ReStore’s Green Thumb Festival this spring.”

ReStore’s Green Thumb Festival provides the Clarksville community with information on gardening, composting, sustainability, and recycling. Green Thumb is Saturday May 7th, 2011 from 9am to 5pm in the ReStore parking lot located at 408 Madison St. in downtown Clarksville.

“The Festival is a great opportunity to bring people to the store, letting them see what ReStore has to offer and a chance to help the community of Clarksville understand more about the culture of our organization. Habitat not only builds affordable housing but also cares about the environment of the communities those houses are built in; from recycling programs to gardens,” said Norbeck.

ReStore will be giving away free mulch donated by Bi-County Waste Management and manure donated by Locust Run Stables. Norbeck explained, “We hope to have a Bobcat to help with the loading of the mulch. But, we will definitely have some larger paper bags and shovels to help the public.” There will be a myriad of activities for kids throughout the day ranging from face painting to making wind chimes to the popular new game, corn hole. The education tent will have a variety of demos on topics ranging from making a rain barrel, hydroponic gardening, edible gardens, etc. Presenters will cover a wide variety of topics such as raising bees, caring for our native trees, garden pests and diseases, and growing herbs just to name a few.

Event coordinator, Becky Hall said, “It’s about everything in the garden. So, if you’re an avid gardener or a novice looking to learn more, or would just like some free mulch, come check out the festival.” The complete schedule of events can be found on ReStore’s website, www.restoreclarksville.org.

The event wouldn’t be possible without the support of sponsors like Quality Web Printing, Active Screen Graphics, Sign Art, Bi-County Solid Waste Management, Montgomery Farmers Co-Op, Madison Street United Methodist Church, Hilldale Baptist Church, Red River Hardscapes, Sunbelt, Locust Stable, Copies in Flash, Pepsi, and Inadequate Seating.com.
